Block Play
Preschool children demonstrate understanding of geometry and
spatial sense when they:
Say, “You put your horse inside the fence. I’m going to make mine jump over the fence.
Use blocks to build an imaginary playground.
Notice that bubbles look like circles

Children, 2 to 7 years old are in preoperational thought, when reasoning can take place only through action. When building with blocks, children at this stage develop a beginning mathematical understanding in a number of areas:

  • Comparisons – recognizing differences in height, width, shape, weight and between “more,” “less,” “the same”
  • Seriation – ordering by size, constructing steps
  • Correspondence – making constructions size fit dolls, trucks, etc.
  • Classification – matching, sorting.
  • Part-Whole Relationships- recognizing subunits and smaller patterns within the construction, relation of individual blocks to the structure, seeing component parts again when building are dismantled or when they collapse.
  • Grouping-adding identical-size blocks to buildings, cleaning up by twos or threes.
  • Estimation-judging quantity of materials needed for buildings, space needed.
  • Measurement-being aware of space needed, height, length, volume.

Cleanup Activity
The enjoyment of cleanup is an activity in its own right and will be enhanced if children have wagons and carts to use in delivering the blocks to the shelves. Prior to shelving, blocks should be stacked on the floor. Children will match and sort as the place all unit, double-unit, roof boards, triangles, ramps, cylinders, etc., in their own pile. After each block is stacked, teachers can introduce a problem-solving game. Example: “Jose, place the longest block on the floor on the shelf.” “Tammy, place the block that is curved on the shelf,” etc. Math vocabulary and positional words can be introduced through this activity.

**Space Blocks** – Create and discover patterns using three dimensional blocks.

**Tangrams** – Use all seven Chinese puzzle pieces to make shapes and solve problems.

**Tessellations** – Using regular and semi-regular tessellations to tile the plane.

**Transformations - Reflection** – Dynamically interact with and see the result of a reflection transformation.

**Transformations - Rotation** – Dynamically interact with and see the result of a rotation transformation.

**Transformations - Translation** – Dynamically interact with and see the result of a translation transformation.

**Triominoes** – Manipulate the puzzle pieces and find multiple solutions.

**Turtle Geometry** – Explore numbers, shapes, and logic by programming a turtle to move.
